Just some random Willie Mays factoids.......

His first ML hit was a HR *over the roof* of the Polo Grounds off Warren Spahn.

Also, that same rookie year....in the 1951 Series, game 5......he hit a fly ball against the Yankees that both DiMaggio and fellow rookie Mantle were both chasing.  DiMaggio called Mantle off, and Mantle somehow got a cleat stuck in a drain pipe, injuring his knee - the first (and infamous) injury that would plague him the rest of his career.

In his early years for the Giants in NY, he would often go down in the streets of Harlem and play stickball with the kids at night.  He also would often walk to the park to play the Giants games.

In 1963 (I'm sure we all remember), Marichal and Spahn hooked up in an incredible pitcher's duel, each pitching *15* (WHAT pitch count?) scoreless innings. Mays homered in the 16th for a 1-0 victory.

If one believes Ken Burns' Baseball, Rube Waddell was about as interesting a character as baseball could stand...and OF COURSE very much the fan favorite...the only thing I've seen in MLB *sort of* like him was "Bird" Fidrych...I suspect you recall a couple lovable oddballs as well...

Sure.  Fidrych, but as you say "sort of".  And Piersall we've recently discussed.  Obviously the Spaceman and Satchel.  I'll probly think of some more later.  Some of those 'old guys' were pretty wild.  They didn't have reputations to uphold, nor have much invested in the job because the pay was so low.

Maybe Rose or Satchel or Pujols deserve to be on that list?

I considered mentioning Ellis, and apparently he was a 'bit' of a character............but rejected the idea because of the over-emphasis of *that* one famous incident.   On that list.........Rose (no); Satchel (yes, as I noted above); Pujols (don't know enough about his hi-jinx).
