I saw him throw in rookie league.  He had plenty of 'pop', but he impressed me more with just his overall workmanlike demeanor.  One of those "a man just doing his job" vibes.  Could not have predicted his future, but also not the least bit surprised.

After he 'retired', he moved back to his old stomping grounds in Tampa.  A former roommate of mine owned and ran a beer/liquor store there, just a very few blocks from where he lived, and would tell me they would chat a little bit each time he came in.  Said he just seemed a nice, friendly regular guy.

Correct.  Amazing he got on a card.  "The records" are littered with quite a few similar stories, but his is indeed extreme.

[Addendum:  The story on Larry Yount's pitching 'career' is that he felt elbow soreness as he was warming up, so didn't actually pitch(?).  But because he was announced, it counts as a game appearance.  (I had known that at one time years ago but had forgotten it.)]

Ok, here's the questions to the "Robin Yount" answer:

1.  Who was the last major leaguer to hit a HR in a major league game at only age 18?

2.  Who broke the record previously set my Mel Ott of most major league games played as a teenager?

[I guess could have added in 3. and 4.  What player was the youngest to reach 100 HRs?  What player had the most hits in MLB in the 1980s?]

So we've done a lot of pitching trivia.  Let's try some with hitters.   There are quite a few hitters these days who have achieved 3000+ hits.  Of those............what 'classification' do Craig Biggio, Rickey, and Ripken share?

And just because...............one more (for now):  What famous MLBer (not a pitcher) was pretty good with a banjo, and has one of his banjos in the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashvegas?

Well, yes, he did, in h.s.  His 38.1 ppg is *still* the record at his h.s. - and I *think* for all of Long Island, altho his career scoring record was eclipsed by Yaz.  And he *may* have been playing under the stricture of "no dunking allowed"; don't know about that.  I don't think my question in any way implied I had some sort of picture.  Nor have I looked.  Might be an interesting quest?

Just fyi.................

Jim Boeheim remembers Jim Brown: ‘A legend. Always will be’ - syracuse.com

Doesn't mention dunking..........but clearly he could hoop:

"Boeheim, a native of Lyons, New York, watched Brown star while at Syracuse. As a senior, Brown rushed for 982 yards in just eight games. He scored 43 points in a single-game against Colgate.

“I remember watching him play here,’’ Boeheim said. “I remember him scoring three touchdowns and kicking all the extra points in the Cotton Bowl (against TCU).’’

Brown’s No. 44 is synonymous with Syracuse football. The number was later worn by Floyd Little and Ernie Davis, but it started with Brown.

In addition to football, Brown also played basketball, lacrosse and even track and field while at Syracuse.

“He won a track meet all by himself,’’ Boeheim said. “He won five or six events.’’

As a pro, Brown led the NFL in rushing in eight of his nine years in the league. He was a three-time Most Valuable Player. He lifted the Browns to the NFL title in 1964.

And he *averaged* over 15 yds/carry in h.s. - and *averaged* over 40 ppg one of his h.s. years.

Played for the Orange hoops team 2 years, averaging 2nd-highest one year (soph) and 4th-highest the other (junior).  And of course then he was an All-American in lacrosse when he played that his senior year, being second nationally in scoring (and sparking the rule change).  Was inducted into the college lacrosse HOF 12 years *before* the college football HOF.

I did a *cursory* search for him dunking, but found nothing.

"A victim of racial attitudes of the times, Brown came to Syracuse in the fall of 1953 without a scholarship in hand and was the only black player on the freshman football team. In high school, Brown earned 13 letters including football (averaging 14.9 yards per carry), basketball (averaging 38+ points per game), baseball, and lacrosse.

He played basketball his sophomore and junior years at Syracuse, averaging 13.1 points per game. He was a ferocious rebounder, and the best athlete on the floor. He would score 33 points against Sampson Air Force Base his sophomore season, in a game he did not even start. Brown would not return for his senior season however, because he was not permitted to be a starter. An unwritten rule at Syracuse prohibited the team starting three black athletes in basketball, and Syracuse had Vinnie Cohen and Manny Breland also on the team. Cohen believed Syracuse would have won the national title in basketball in 1957 if Brown had played with them; as it was, they lost in the Elite Eight."

Jim Brown

So.................don't (easily) find any evidence he could dunk, but reason dictates he most certainly could.  I don't think this would have been possible without that capability:  "On occasion, he participated with the track team. In 1954 he finished fifth in the decathlon at the National AAU meet."

Biggio, Ripken, and Rickey share this anomaly(?):  Lowest career BAs among those in the 3,000-hit club:

From lowest:

Ripken:  .276

Rickey:  .279

Biggio:  .281

Others in that range:

Winfield:  .283

Yount and Yaz:  .285

Beltre:  .286

Murray:  .287

Palmeiro:  .288

I *BELIEVE* this list is accurate, or at least was as of about 20 months ago when I compiled it; and includes all under .290.  (Next lowest is Lou Brock at .293.)  It's possible things have changed, but they couldn't have very much.

Addendum:  Biggio and Jeter share the fairly amazing distinction of having 5(!) hits each on the days they reached that milestone, with Biggio being thrown out at second trying to stretch a hit into a double (not sure if that was hit #3000).
