Right now, according to the radar I see, it's raining almost NOWHERE AT ALL in the entire country...around 1730 EDT...meteorological anomaly for sure...

I recall a sandstorm in the Red Sea, but this is what roils havoc hitting Yucatan, or anywhere coastal all the way up to Iceland.

GOBS of new low records (and snow totals) out there today, of course, but this one seems noteworthy...........record low for this date in Fayetteville, AR:  7 (yes, that seems quite moderate 🤔) - until today.  Now it's -9.  A 16F degree adjustment is pretty extreme.   Wish NOAA did standard deviations on this kind of stuff, but they don't.

Nothing near a record here, but the inconvenience has been pretty high. Quarter inch of freezing rain covered with 3” snow followed by another quarter inch of freezing rain. And 16 degrees. 

The sun came out this morning and started the melting. But, the temperature was still below freezing, so the downspouts and gutters filled with ice. Sigh. 

Will be warmer tomorrow.

In other important news, a ten minute afternoon nap is said to reset “synaptic homeostatic plasticity” in the brain.  I looked at my wife, raised both my fists in the air and pumped them, and a band of angels rocking the Hallelujah Chorus flowed invisibly through the room. Rest easy folks!

Many of them struck me. Frozen water falls, the ice in the three rivers. The person wearing trash bags for snow shoes was a tad disconcerting. 

I liked the cross-country skiers. Reminds me of a hard winter in Colorado when I was a grad student and needed to get to campus to keep a two-year experiment going; a two mile trek on skis through 18" of snow on unplowed streets. 

Uphill, both ways?

I hate to ask, but if y’all spot any strays, pls help them! It’s freezing where I am too and my heart just withers for outside animals. Many don’t know even dogs are at risk in extreme cold. Small breeds & short/thin coats for sure, but also bigger dogs. All animals have exposed skin and most get frostbite on ears, toes, etc if out for hours below 30F. Vets estimate age of outdoor animals by checking for signs of frostbite to gage how many winters they’ve survived. Cats, great at conserving body heat, can tolerate 40F IF healthy, not young or old AND IF they stay dry, but even healthy cats will get frostbite below 30F, esp. below 20F if out for hours OR if they get wet, (in cold, moisture= enemy #1) or if they don’t have another cat or somewhere safe to burrow for warmth. While their very young, old, or sickly counterparts majorly risk hypothermia/death. 

1. Help dogs: BRING THEM IN! If stray, put in a safe room, give food and water, call a rescuer (preferably no kill/ foster based rescue-check local facebook pages)

2. Help feral cats:Make quick, cheap, easy, +lifesaving winter shelter from just a storage bin and pine straw! An exacto knife &hair dryer can easily cut 6in hole in side for entrance. Fill abt 1/3 or 1/2 with straw, tada! Instant Cat Shelter. I drop some each year by businesses or feral spots (I tape note to top: “EMERGENCY WINTER SHELTER FOR KITTENS SEEN IN AREA. PLEASE DONT DISCARD, CALL xxx-xxx-xxxx IF YOU’D LIKE US TO MOVE IT”) 

*P.S. If ya rlly wanna nail it, duct tape sheets of $2 Mylar material (space blankets) over a few cut panels of styrofoam or yoga mat, (anything insulating that isn’t cloth & won’t absorb moisture) and tape to sides & roof to trap body heat. ..But in a pinch, pine straw in bin or styrofoam cooler with hole cut out does just fine. And ferals WILL use it. Also handy for possums (beneficial animals who only hunt pests, won’t hurt pets, don’t easily carry disease and only move near homes in cold when very desperate—they’ll leave asap when safe) squirrels, bunnies, & raccoons (they’re just rlly cute k)

firenze: I deserved that, but, no. It was totally flat. A bit rare for the foothills, but fortunate.

Jacksonville and Tallahassee were even colder, with morning lows of 23 and 21 degrees, respectively.

Much of the western US is experiencing spring-like warmth that stands in stark contrast to the frigid Arctic air over the eastern US.

Parts of the Southeast coast just picked up more snow during this storm than some snowfall-starved western cities have seen all winter.

Savannah, Georgia, and Charleston, South Carolina, both saw about a half-inch of snow on Saturday. [my edit:  Savannah ended up getting *at least* 2 inches - and I kinda think Charleston did, too.]

That’s not much, but it’s still more than the 0.1 inches Salt Lake City has had since fall; the city has a snowfall deficit of more than 30 inches.

Perhaps even more incredible is the 17.7 inches near the southeast coast of North Carolina. That’s more snow than Flagstaff, Arizona, has seen all winter. The northern Arizona city at about 7,000 feet in elevation has just 15.4 inches of snow, which is 31% of average through the end January.

Friends in Nashville a week without power. They have a fireplace and a gas stove. Ice storm a week ago and 37,000 still without power.

This is the slow motion playing out of what we have known for years. Yes, it will go in cycles, and yes, members of Congress will continue to bring snowballs into the chambers in February and ask, "Where's your global warming now?" But this is real, and the results are known.

How?

That's not very descriptive, I must say. 

Well, if you use two or three drones to explode nuclear bombs on the land side of the hurricane, it will raise the temperature so high the hurricane will say "whoa" I'm out of here.

Of course, you might have to evacuate some people and rebuild a few oil rigs.
