Wisconsin winters can be no joke...but seriously, I think kids these days are softer than I recall being...10 degrees, in pajamas? Body heat can keep a healthy kid alive for at least an hour, sure... I suppose, though, if one is not at all inured...

OK, Physics/Geology dudes, give it to me within three decimal places: How many ergs released by the recent 7.8 quake in Turkey/Syria?

Oh good golly - thou asketh much!! Not to mention, do you want to include all the aftershocks, which together are FAR more than just the initial jolt?

You want three decimals in ERGS???? Considering this was quake *roughly* released 10^16 Joules and that an erg is 10^-7 J, a rough estimate in ergs would be 100000000000000000000000. As TN said, you're asking for a lot of significant figures.

The area, roughly of the Arabian plate, which I think is the one that moved, is 5,000,000 square km. That'll get us started. How 'deep' that plate is, is impossible to know, as I'm sure it varies. We could make some guesstimates, I suppose. The quake was how deep? 18 km, I think. The movement was along *at least* 300 km, apparently. Did the whole plate move all at once? (No.) I'll step back and let others take another step or three..... Or I guess I'll just accept the joules given by BuzzClik. I'm sure *somebody* knew what they were doing to reach that. No need to reinvent the wheel - altho sometimes that's fun, too.

Continental crust is ~2.7g/cm^3. (With nothing to go on, I was guessing 3!) So we could come up with a VERY rough calculation for the mass of the Arabian plate, if anyone wants to cipher it out.

Remember Norm Crosby? The Master of the Malapropism. With a straight face (deadpan), he would inject words into sentences where they didn't belong, and people thought it was funny. It wouldn't have been funny if people thought he didn't know better. I was never under the impression that his humor was sophisticated or subtle. My parents despised him, but not because they were too stupid to get the joke. Words were they livelihood, and the novelty of slaughtering the language wore off quickly.

Just my opinion.........altho as someone who until the last 20-25 years or so wasn't that much into genealogy..........I think the two most important questions we can ask, as humans (other than the obvious religious ones, which are related to these, actually, but will go unsaid) are: Where did we come from? Where are we going? The "come from" part goes WAAAY back to the origin of species, the various "out-of-Africa" scenarios, the whole Neanderthal/Denisovan/unknown mystery hominid stuff. To me, that, and the subsequent movements of populations around the globe is just endlessly fascinating. The stuff DNA has given us lately is mind-boggling. The "going" part is why I'm so interested in cosmology. (Which of course is inextricably linked to the very, very, very distant past, too.) And naturally, the possibilities of multiple universes that seem to arise out of quantum mechanics are part of that. Those questions encompass, with their sub-threads, the very essence of being human, and the how/why we exist.

I remember this episode of the Outer Limits, where this man goes into a machine that turned him into a man of the future. His cranium was about twice the size it is now. Given how AI is widely available, I don't think that's gonna happen. Your words ring true, clues to our future lie in our past. Scientifically speaking.
