I purposefully try to keep my US RDA of "A" double/triple or so, through diet w/numerous sources beta carotene.

So since it's C40H56, it can pick up stray (undesirable) ions?

Welllllllll.......................C40H56 doesn't tell me much about (reactivity with) ions, but biochemical reactions don't really 'work' like that - meaning not based just on an empirical formula.  It's all about the structure, context, solubility stuff, etc., etc.  That said..................since A is oil-soluble and not water-soluble, it's very possible to get too much.  And people do; it's kinda dangerous.  But *generally speaking* that's peeps taking really bigger doses than 2x or 3x RDA via supplements.  But maybe not *much* more.  From memory, it's not that hard to get an excess.  There's some crazy, wacky, absurd 'health' claims out there from hucksters.  I am not an expert on A, but think one has to go beyond 2x or 3x to get into a dangerous zone - but you can research that.  I'm not sure 2x or 3x is better than 1x.  Just not sure it would be.  That one's outside my range of expertise.  But it's definitely one of those things where a good diet with the usual carotenes involved should give you as much as you need.

I've heard the same, but I'm merely talking natural beta carotene ingestion...I'm not eating the liver of a bear.

Then you should likely be just fine.  I *have* heard of people OD'ing by drinking massive amounts of carrot juice daily, and such as that.  One's skin begins to turn orange.  One supposes that the donald has his coloring from 'other sources'.

Fat soluble, for sure.

That structure likely won’t dissolve much in water. It also will not likely scavenge inorganic ions (e.g., dissolved metals) but may interact with long chain fatty acids.

Although I am not a biochemist (more of a geochemist), I believe I am solid ground in saying that these particular carbons are so hydrophobic that their interactions with dissolved constituents will be near zero.

A google search of, “Can beta carotene scavenge metals in the body?” will reveal the mechanisms by which beta carotene functions (antioxidant).

I am tempted to write a 'dissertation' on these things, but won't.  I may come back and write something as brief as practical; or if by chance can find a copy of other guides I've written in the past, post that.  Do *not* stay tuned.

Old recipe:

The classic Jim Beam Old Fashioned is a rich, balanced cocktail. To make it, combine 2 oz Jim Beam, 1/4 oz simple syrup, and 3 dashes of Angostura bitters in a mixing glass with ice. Stir until chilled, strain into a rocks glass over a large ice cube, and garnish with an expressed orange peel. [1, 2, 3]
Ingredients
  • Bourbon: 2 oz Jim Beam (White Label or Black)
  • Sweetener: 1/4 oz simple syrup (or 1 sugar cube + a splash of water)
  • Bitters: 3 dashes Angostura bitters
  • Garnish: Orange peel (and optional maraschino cherry) [1, 2, 3]
Instructions
  1. Combine: Add the simple syrup and bitters to a mixing glass.
  2. Ice & Stir: Fill the glass with ice, then pour in the Jim Beam. Stir gently for 15-20 seconds to properly chill and dilute the cocktail.
  3. Serve: Strain the mixture into a rocks glass filled with fresh ice (a single large ice cube is best to prevent rapid melting).
  4. Garnish: Hold the orange peel over the glass and squeeze it to express the citrus oils. Rub the peel along the rim of the glass and drop it in. [1, 2, 3]

Sounds like an excellent recipe! A good Old Fashioned is my favorite mixed drink.

Making it at home, I have been happy only with this variant:

- 2 oz Irish whiskey (Bushmills or Jameson)

- 1 tsp Smiths Old Fashioned mix

- 1 tsp of the Marischino cherry liquid

- 1 or 2 cherries

This minimizes the amount of sugar in the drink, but is still rich in flavor. I don’t like burying the flavor of the liquor in sweetness, etc. It has a somewhat different flavor than the standard fare.

======

NOTE: Some are avid that the best Old Fashioneds use the best bourbons. I disagree. You don’t want to use trash, but I prefer the best to be served neat , enjoying the full taste of every sip.

This is about 8 ounces of Ben and Jerry’s Cherry Garcia non-dairy ice cream. This is 12 hours after the ice cream was dumped out. It didn’t melt, and the vast array of critters (squirrels, raccoons, porcupines, seagulls, etc) gave it a hard pass.

As far as the heading is concerned you can watch the third and fourth videos but the first two just provide the context about an American man living in Sinop, Turkey.

Sinop is the hometown of the Houston Rockets' Alperen Şengün, by the way.

I feel sorry for someone who had no idea that that culture was 3,000 years old - or maybe 6-8-10,000 depending on definition (certainly well more than 3,000).  I guess in his West Coast lifestyle he somehow missed that - altho most folks out there would surely know more about Turkish history than this guy.  Yet Americans are notorious for being insular and incapable of learning more than they have to about other cultures.  A point I've made multiple times herein.  I'm glad he's happy - but one wonders what else he's missed in his life.

That said.............there *is* a difference between *knowing* a civilization is X number of years old, vs. being able to actually visit in person Catalhoyuk, or Gobekli Tepe, or hundreds of other ancient sites in person.   And yet in America.......it's not hard to visit and experience the ancient Native American or Mesoamerican sites of essentially the same ages.   So cultural laziness is at work, methinks.
